S18: Mostly dead is slightly alive

In which we slay an evil cleric before he can slay us and Kiya hangs up on his boss.

Resume battle!

The cultist boss (our best friend) seems rather put out that we are slaying all his minions. He pulls out a glass ball of green stuff and throws it between himself and the party. It explodes on impact, spreading to an unnaturally large area and covering it in grease.

slip ‘n slide

He also summons a spectral dragon claw weapon, which hovers in the air and moves on its own to attack us. It attacks Kiya and she falls unconscious.

  1. Okay, Kiya’s turn.
  2. Oh boy. Is it death save time?
  3. Yup. Roll a death save.
  4. *clatter of dice*
  5. Uh.
  6. Yikes.
  7. What does a natural 1 do…?
  8. Oh no. Really?
  9. Yeah 🙁
  10. That’s a critical failure. It counts as two fails instead of one.
  11. But don’t panic! You’re only mostly dead. You just have to succeed three times in a row.
  12. Then you’ll be fine!
  13. haha
  14. Well that’s a relief.
  15. We should probably go save Kiya if we can.

Vistra is able to reach Kiya and administer a healing potion before she can fail her third save. Kiya’s back up!

…Just in time to return the favor for Vistra, who gets whacked in the face for 23 necrotic damage from that troublesome cleric and also goes down. She succeeds some impressive dexterity checks to get across the grease, and gives Vistra a healing potion. Then the three of us finish the cleric off.

Yay!

We take a look around the room and notice a glowing pool on the table the cultists were gathered around. In the pool, we are surprised to see the form of a chromatic red dragon staring angrily at us. Kiya can tell that it is a scrying spell, and Tyener gets a strong whiff of evil from the pool.

The dragon asks angrily about someone named Hiram, who we assume was the cleric. It insults us a little, and won’t tell us anything useful, so Kiya prestididgeridoos all the water out of the bowl, effectively hanging up on him.

Among the bodies we find 90 gold (+30 gp to Kiya). The priest is carrying a sheaf of papers with his non-evil sermon written on it. He is also carrying a magnifying glass in his pocket, like the one Rythnax was carrying. It is not magic.

Tyener discovers a map of Sword Coast. Some portions are crossed out, and a few others have circles on them. The swamp area where we fought Rithnax has been crossed out. Waterdeep has been crossed out. Neverwinter has been circled.

Kiya grabs all 6 scimitars, and 4 daggers from the kobolds and the priest’s dagger as well. She also takes all seven symbols from their wrists.
